7 Electronic music genres you might not know the name of - House Music Evolution

Updated: Jan 14, 2024

Music genres have always been a debate between electronic music audiences. Music styles rise and fall during eras and generations enjoy timeless tunes that never get old. It's absurd to decide what's tasteful so here is a list of genres and sub-genres that made a breakthrough after the lockdown of Covid.

Electronic music Genres that made it's breakthrough after covid - microhouse, afrohouse, minimal techhouse, garage

1-House Music

It's a timeless sound that has left a mark on the music industry for the past 30 years. Today, artists are digging through their old vinyl collections to find vintage gems that are in sync with what's happening.

3-MINIMAL Tech-House

A derivative of dancey electronic music that has been growing on a large scale and is expected to become a Tomorrowland mainstage vibe in the next few years (Mark my words) - This sound is unique because it has uplifting kicks with an elegant bassline and story to it, and since the covid lockdown people want to dance continuously without interruptions.

Artists: Chris Stussy, Anotr, Mateo Dufour & Djoko (formerly Kolter)

4-Microhouse

Microhouse’s main influences are techno and deep house. Chords are more modal or dissonant than other mainstream house genres, creating a similar vibe to deep house. Arrangements are typically longer, drawing on progressive house structures. Sonically, microhouse draws from the digital sound palette of techno.

Eventually, Microhouse became a dirty word and the sole preserve of Romanians with Hawtin haircuts banging their seventh pill at a Raresh set.

Artists: Barac, Priku, Barut

5-Rominimal (Romanian techno)

Defining the sound as minimal techno with rusty sounds over top would be an accurate description. Although it is simple, it is complicated in its simplicity. Over raw sound drums and minimalist baselines, the music is delicate and ethereal. This movement is largely driven by the Romanian crowd. The ravers lose themselves in the music and appear hypnotized as if wired directly into it. Since the crowd tends to prefer hours of continuous music over short sets with lots of highs and lows, Romanian productions tend to be slightly longer. This means artists are not forced to compress their tracks or sets to fit in the crowd. It is common for Rominimal artists to blend two, three, or more tracks without the use of software to create a blissful state.

Artists: Raresh, Petre Inspirescu & Sit (Cristi Cons & Vlad Caia)

6-Tech-House

Tech house is a subgenre of house music that mixes techno and tribal house elements. Originally, tech house was a name for electronic dance music that incorporated elements of techno, such as "intense basslines" and "bouncy uplifting kicks," with a progressive house groove. At the time of its creation, the music possessed a clean and minimal production style associated with the Detroit and United Kingdom techno scene.

Artists: Marco Carola, The Martinez Brothers & Paco Osona.

7-Afrohouse

Originally from South Africa, Afro House music is a subgenre of House music. Although distinct in its sound, it is often considered to be a blend of Kwaito, Tribal, Deep, and Soulful House music. Globally, this sound has gained huge popularity, and when blended with deep/tech elements, it has gained even more appeal.

Artists: Black Coffee, Idd Aziz, Francis Mercier & Notre Dam
