The Mix and Interview Series: Episode 3
Featured Artist: AM I RIGHT
Launching into Episode 3 of our series, we present a 2 hour mixtape curated by AM I RIGHT and Karim Yousry.
Now, join us as we uncover the guru's fun yet informative secrets.
Q1:Can you tell us about the genesis of your live show? What inspired you to start this project?
I grew up with rock-pop music and have always played guitar and sung in rock bands. Let's say that my love for electronic music came late listening to music by Who Made Who and Rufus Du Sol. I liked the fact that they made electronic music but played live and so I started to experiment too. Coming from live music I can't imagine how to do a non-live performance. It took me more or less 3-4 years to find my style and understand what I want to do.
Q2:What's a typical day in the studio like for AM I RIGHT? Walk us through your creative process.
I don't have a standard creative process. Sometimes the idea comes from a lyric, sometimes from a vocal melody, sometimes from a bass line. Every time the start is always different and you don't know where it takes you. The most difficult thing for me personally is finding the initial idea, then the inspiration leads me to have so many ideas and melodies that sometimes it's difficult to decide what to keep and what not. I write some drafts, some ideas at home then I go to the studio and together with Michele (my studio guy) we choose the best ideas, change some parts and finish the song.
Q3:Are there any specific tools or hardware that are essential to your music production?
The bass line made with my Korg and the Diva plug in.
Q4:How would you describe your musical style and the sound you aim to achieve with your productions?
Well....as I already said, I don't have a proper electronic music background, so I find it difficult to categorize or label all the various genres that are close to each other, including mine)). Sometimes you use one type of kick and you're in one genre, you write a certain bass melody and you're in another specific genre. My music is based on melodies, sometimes close to melodic techno, sometimes house. I'd like to think that it doesn't fall into one genre. I also like the idea of giving a touch of humanity to electronic music, which is why I decided to sing)
Q5:Are there any particular artists or genres that have influenced your work?
As I said Who Made Who and Rufus Du Sol were the first artists to influence me
Q6:What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?
Thinking about the music industry nowadays is not easy, much more complicated than it was a few years ago. In a certain way it is sometimes strange to think that we use the term "music industry" but most of the times music in its essence is just a small part of it. Sometimes as an artist it is frustrating to realize that you have to focus more on other aspects than just the song writing. I believe that the music industry has changed and is continually changing just as our modern way of life is changing rapidly. Certain aspects change for the better and certain aspects change for the worse
Q7:Could you share any memorable or funny incidents from your experiences on tour? What are some of the most unforgettable moments you've had while performing live?
It is something happened while I was playing during my the last show but I don't know if it's a funny thing or not😂😂....usually when I play I move a lot and I remember having a cramp in the calf of my leg while I was singing; I remember hiding the pain was very complicated.
Maybe one of the most beautiful moment was playing in Madeira. I was playing in a hotel by the sea and I remember that from the stage you could see the whole city and while I was playing I repeated few times to myself..."wow this is fantastic"
Q8:What's next for Am I Right? Any upcoming projects or collaborations that you're excited about?
Right now I'm writing several songs and then I'll work on the new live set.
I have also some new songs coming out in collaboration with other artists. Next releases will be with Paax (Tulum), Airsand and Kadhem.
And with that, we conclude our amazing chat with AM I Right.
thank you so much for sharing your stories and insights. It's been an absolute pleasure.
